October 3, 2024. OTTAWA. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is pleased to announce the membership of our new branch in Waterloo—Wellington, representing the dynamic and growing Ukrainian community in the region.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Waterloo—Wellington branch to the UCC family. Their efforts to support both Ukrainian newcomers and the broader Ukrainian community in Canada are inspiring. Вітаємо!” said Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the UCC.
“For the past two and a half years, our local volunteers have been working hard to support Ukrainian Canadian initiatives here in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph, as well as the surrounding areas along the Grand River. We are delighted to formalize our affiliation with UCC National. This strong connection will benefit the Ukrainian Canadian community in our part of Ontario, a community that has grown significantly since 2022,” stated Michael Doroshenko, President of UCC Waterloo—Wellington.
Founded in 2022 as a branch of the UCC Ontario Provincial Council, the Waterloo—Wellington branch has been active in providing vital support to Ukrainian newcomers. Key initiatives have included distributing laptops to newcomers, advocating on behalf of the Ukrainian community with local officials, and coordinating efforts with partner organizations to meet the community’s needs. The branch also hosts weekly meetings for Ukrainian parents, providing a welcoming space for connection and support.
The branch also organizes annual events such as February 24 Commemoration, Vyshyvanka Day, and a summer picnic in August to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day. These events foster unity and celebrate Ukrainian heritage within the local community.
The UCC continues to welcome Ukrainian communities to join as branches, helping to strengthen our national network. By becoming part of the UCC, local organizations can better connect, collaborate, and share resources. We have recently updated our website with guidelines on joining UCC to streamline the application process.
