The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) condemns the International Olympic Committee’s shameful decision to provisionally lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).
For more than four years – 1596 days – Russia has waged genocidal war of aggression against Ukraine. Every day, Russian bombs and rockets murder Ukrainian children, women, and men, including Olympic athletes. Every day, Russia commits war crimes and crimes against humanity against Ukraine. Russia has abducted tens of thousands of Ukrainian children. Russian president Putin and his henchmen have been indicted by the International Criminal Court.
By reinstating the Russian Olympic Committee, the IOC has turned a blind eye to Russian crimes. This is a betrayal of the principles for which the Olympic movement claims to stand and a stain on the IOC that will never be removed – nor forgotten.
The UCC calls on the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee to join Ukraine and other allies in opposing and demanding a reversal of this disgraceful decision by the IOC.
