January 21, 2019. OTTAWA. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) expresses its sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Andrij Makuch. Mr. Makuch passed away on January 18. He was 62.
A talented scholar and intellectual, Mr. Makuch made a significant contribution to Canadian scholarship through his many years of work at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, as an editor at the Encyclopedia of Ukraine and an author of many articles and reviews in scholarly periodicals.
As associate director at the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium, Mr. Makuch fostered increasing knowledge about the Holodomor in Canada and around the world. Working at the UCC Saskatchewan Provincial Council, Mr. Makuch combined his love of education and scholarship with a deep dedication to the Ukrainian Canadian community.
“Mr. Makuch’s passing is a profound loss for our community,” stated Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the UCC. “I had the honour to know Andrij personally, and he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and humour. On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian community, I express my deepest sympathies to Mr. Makuch’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
