July 25, 2025. OTTAWA, ON. For the last three days Ukrainians have held demonstrations in support of the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions – in particular the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutors Office (SAPO).
These demonstrations follow the July 22 adoption by Parliament and signature into law by President Zelenskyy of legislation that undermines the independence of the NABU and SAPO.
Several international organizations and international partner governments, and the European Union have voiced their concern about attempts to weaken the independence of these institutions.
In response, President Zelenskyy and a group of Members of Parliament have submitted separate draft laws to Parliament aimed at responding to the concerns raised by civil society and restoring the independence of the NABU and SAPO. The Parliamentary speaker stated that the President’s draft law will be considered by Parliament on July 31.
Continued engagement and pressure by civil society and international partners are key to ensuring the restoration of the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions.
