June 9, 2026. OTTAWA, ON. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is appalled by the acts of vandalism of the Castle Mountain Internment Camp Statue and Bronze Interpretive Plaque in Banff National Park, Alberta.
The Castle Mountain Internment Camp Statue commemorates Canada’s First National Internment Operations, which took place from 1914, to 1920, during which 8,579 Ukrainians and other Europeans, branded as ‘enemy aliens,’ were imprisoned in 24 internment camps across Canada.
Two bronze plaques are missing from the Memorial and the Statue has sustained significant damage.
“The UCC calls for a full investigation by law enforcement of this vandalism, including any possible motivation of hate,” stated Danylo Korbabicz, UCC CEO. “To attack a Memorial commemorating victims of a painful chapter of Canadian history is a disgraceful act whose perpetrators must be brought to justice.”
