BIO
Ed Lysyk was born on May 4, 1953 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories to Edward and Marion Lysyk. The son of an RCMP officer, Ed grew up in various cities across the country with his three brothers and one sister including Fort Smith, Regina, Aklavik, Ottawa, Yellowknife, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Inuvik and Prince Rupert. He eventually came back to Regina attending the University of Saskatchewan Regina Campus before completing his Arts degree in History at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in 1973. It was also there he completed his Law Degree in 1977.
Upon completion he articled at Pederson, Norman, McLeod and Todd in Regina where he became partner in 1981. This is the same city he met and raised a family with his wife Janet. Married in 1978, he was a doting father to his children Crystal, Kathy and Brian. Ed also made time for his interests including his Ukrainian radio show on CJTR, woodworking, gardening, cooking, winemaking, computers and the Ukrainian Culture. Ed drew great satisfaction through his work with the Ukrainian Community filling multiple roles, including President, with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Regina Branch and Provincial Council, Ukrainian Canadian Professional Business Association, Ukrainian National Federation board in addition to organizing the Adult Ukrainian Language Camp, the Canada Ukraine Scientific Internship Program and his extensive work assisting recent Ukrainian immigrants to Regina. He was also dedicated to getting the Holodmor recognized by the Canadian and Saskatchewan Governments which was achieved in 2008. Ed also did extensive volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of Canada, Regina Homebuilders Association, Regina Planning Commission, Regina Mortgage and Loans Association in addition to many other organizations.
For his dedicated service and leadership Ed has been recognized on several occasions. In 2002, he was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal and in 2012, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Ed retired from law in 2005 at which point he travelled throughout the world with Janet. It was during this time he achieved one of his life dreams, seeing the Panama Canal and Machu Picchu in Peru. Ed’s life passed after a brief fight with cancer but he was fortunate to meet his granddaughter, Norah Rose, who lit up his last few months.
